A wrap party, a Pair of Races, and a Birthday

well hello! It has been busy in these parts to say the least and I’m epically exhausted. I did not take a break post LA Marathon. Instead I’m running with the awesome So Cal Coyotes to train for this year’s San Francisco marathon. I’m very excited.

In the past few weeks I’ve had the Team NutriBullet wrap party, the Hollywood Half Marathon, my Birthday, and the inaugural Sunset Strip Half Marathon.  It has been a whirlwind. Tons of fun but no time to catch my breath. So, that said I’ll leave you with photos.

First, the amazing and crazy fun Team NutriBullet wrap party. Being a part of this team was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. My teammates are the most amazing and inspriring people I’ve ever met. I consider myself honored and lucky to train alongside them and call them friends.  I cannot wait for next year and hope I am lucky enough to be chosen for this team for a second year.

Second the Hollywood half marathon. My third year in a row running this. Jennifer came in town for my birthday weekend and to run this with me. A bunch of my Team NutriBullet friends also ran and everywhere I was on the course I saw people I know and love. This was also my birthday race since it took place on the day before my 46th birthday. I was wished a happy birthday in every mile of that race. So fun. It was also Jason’s very first half Marathon and he smoked it (and me). I’m so proud of my friend and loved running into him on the course.

Third, my birthday weekend marched on. Jason R, Bob, and Suzanne were also in town. On Saturday night Jen and I and the aforementioned friends plus Original Flavor Robin (not to be confused with Cool Ranch Robin) went to see a bunch of metal tribute bands at the House of Blues. We were the guest of the Guns n Roses band and they wished me a happy birthday from the stage. (Thanks Bob!). The other bands were tributes to Judas Priest, Metallica, Rob Zombie, and Stone Temple Pilots.

Then on Sunday, my actual birthday, we did brunch for 23 at a local restaurant. It was a perfect way to ring in 46. I had my core friend group there, some college friends, some running friends, and some work friends. It was so much fun!!

And finally today I ran the inaugural Sunset Strip half marathon with my Team NutriBullet friends Corazon and Cynthia and also saw a bunch of friends out on the course. It was great to be able to walk to the start line from home and I look forward to running this again next year.

In between some of these I began to fall in love with trail running while running the Backbone Trail with the Coyotes. I’m learning how to HOWL as we ‘Yotes say. 😉

Unless I randomly pick up a race, today was my last half Marathon before the San Francisco marathon at the end of July. Time to focus on running and strength training and eating right while also having fun because as Coach Jimmy says: “if you’re not having fun you’re doing something wrong.”

4 days!

In 4 days I will run my second full marathon and my first LA Marathon.

I’m pretty excited. I’ve lived in Los Angeles since 1987 and this is my hometown, a city I love, the place I feel the most at home.

I’m running the course through my beloved city with 108 teammates and many friends from other walks of my life. I’ve trained hard for this day.

Despite the forecasted 90 degree temperatures, I vow to enjoy the journey and finish strong, whether I PR or not.

Also 2 weeks after my car was totaled, I got my new car. It had 7 miles on it when I drove it off the lot.

My marathon team is better than yours…

The past five months training with Team NutriBullet for Sunday’s 30th LA Marathon have been  amazing.

My teammates are some of the most inspirational  people I’ve ever met. I’ve made some amazing friends, some incredible memories, and had a hell of a good time.

Sunday’s weather is a bummer (photo by my teammate and friend Denis)

and since that photo was created the temps have gone up. 91 is now the forecast.

But you know what? I’m done worrying about it. It is what it is. It will affect every single runner on the course. It is up to each of us to decide how to deal with it. I’m going to choose to NOT beat myself up if I slow to a walk. I’m not an elite runner nor am I someone who running comes naturally to. I’m going to choose to have a good time and enjoy myself and say hi to friends on the course and FINISH STRONG.

This has been an amazing journey that has changed my life.  I’m so grateful to have been a part of this team.

18 days

I love these ladies!

I love these ladies

So, this happened yesterday. I’m in taper mode of course, the LA Marathon is 18 days away. My favorite local massage place offered a Groupon special for half off hour-long massages. I bought two. I was getting the second of two massages when a 78-year-old gentleman who lives on the priciest street in the Brentwood neighborhood of LA lost control of his 2015 Lexus SUV and plowed into my car as it was parked on the street at a meter. 4 cars were involved. He hit me, I hit the car in front of me, that car hit the car in front of it. The three of us were parked. Those two were in retail stores and saw it happen. I was, well, nekkid with my phone off getting a heavenly deep tissue massage.  Beverly Hills PD tracked me down via Facebook. The officer in charge was a runner too.

I’ve had my car for 15 months on a 60 month loan. Yeah so there’s that giant pain in the ass of still being upside down in my loan.

It would be very surprising if it wasn’t totaled. The jaunty angle of that back tire looks like a broken axle to me. The origami of the back end speaks to frame and suspension damage.

And fellow marathoners imagine yourself in my shoes – six jobs, totaled car, and a giant upside down loan and bullshit to deal with. 18 days.  I am so exhausted and overwhelmed. I really love Gino Jetta. He’s the 6th Jetta and 8th VW I’ve owned.

I’ll tell you one thing –  it is certainly distracting from the taper madness.

Star Wars Half Marathon Runventure!

IMG_9010-0Hello!!!!  It has been awhile.  Marathon training has consumed my life. I go to bed at 9:30pm, I get up at 4:00am, I run from 4:15-5:15am, I take a shower, go to work, take a Bar Method class after work a few days a week, eat lunch/dinner (it seems these days I only have time for one or the other), go to bed and then start the whole crazy thing over again. Except on Mondays I train with my coach and on Saturdays or Sundays I train with Team NutriBullet.

The last few weeks I’ve made a little room for fun before I re-button down (today) and get ready for the 54 day sprint to the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon.

This past Thursday I packed a bag and a few bottles of wine, dropped my dog off at a friend’s house, and headed down to Anaheim to meet Sigrid for the inaugural Star Wars half marathon weekend.

My offering to the marathon gods…

IMG_7402…also known as how my knees came to look like roadkill.

It was a sunny and lovely Saturday and I was doing a 6 ish mile (we run by time, not mileage and this was a 1 hour, 10 minute run) run on what is roughly miles 20-23 (out and back) of the LA marathon course. Through the Veteran’s Administration campus in West LA into Brentwood and down San Vicente.

I was feeling GREAT and it has been a long time since I’ve felt great on a run. My workouts with my private kick ass USC alum coach are paying off. My workouts with team NutriBullet are paying off. The coach there gave me a mental coaching session this past week that made perfect sense to me. I like homework and clear, quantifiable goals and both coaches give me mental and physical homework that rocks.

So there I was, Sugar Cult on my iPod, running out of the VA, across the street and up onto the sidewalk on San Vicente. (la marathon stadium to sea course map for those not in la)

And then it happened. Read more
